What is the purpose of my website?
Most business owners will reply to this question with ‘to promote my business’, but that’s just not good enough. Put that on your homepage and it will turn people off and likely lose you customers.
You need to think about what the purpose of your website is to those that will be visiting it. Can they buy products from the website, or at least find the necessary information in order to do so? If so, you need to make it easy for them to find. Are you directing customers to your website when they want to find more information? Again then, you need to make it easy for them to find.
While most, if not all, business owners create a website with the intent of increasing their customer base and generating more profit, you need to think about the purpose of your website before any customer ever lands on it. Only then can you really identify its true purpose, and start grabbing all those customers you’re ultimately after.
It’s worth mentioning that this is a question that ideally should be asked before you ever start working on your site. It will provide the basic design you want, and the type of layout you need.
